WAVMX - WANDERING 2008
CZ legends Jaroslav Falta and Jiri Starec were recent guests of honour at the annual WAVMX event held on the weekend of August 16/17.
Many thanks to Peter Drakeford for managing to smuggle this report of the weekend back East!

With the AGM being held Saturday night Les & I decided we'd camp the night at the track for a change. This meant having bikes ready by early afternoon for a change, instead of late into the evening as usual preparation goes. The oldest BSA circulating only needed the tyre pressure checked as Les assured it would start the next morning, no worries. The every reliable XL on the other hand sprung a leak from the tank that wasn't about to be fixed before race day. Like most vintage bike owners, I have a pile of spares, a bike that came off 2nd best from a close encounter with a car. I found something that resembled a tank, it held fuel & we were off.
No sign of rain Sunday morning & we were in for a great day. Those who inspected the track before they rode made the right choice of wearing waterproof clothing. There were a couple of track-width puddles, depth unknown, that weren't so easy to detect from the pits. They could have been drained but I suspect they were left intentionally to drown the memories of Harrow & Campbelltown. I put on a rain coat for practice which protected the top half, the bottom half wasn't so lucky. I should have know better than to follow someone 3 metres back & 2 to the side, especially after the first puddle on that straight! Most people were soaked through & enjoying every minute of it.
The track became drier as the day went on. It got faster, & it got nastier in the way of nut-crushing holes that many were unlucky enough to find on their first lap out for a while. Quite a few spills occurred, they may have to name a corner after young Morsey (I counted 3 get offs!). Mark (hand grenade) Hanlon exploded right in front of me on the front straight, he was so lucky not to be used as traction! But of course the most memorable of crashes was the sidecar pile up that looked incredibly viscous from afar. We were a little nervous to see what came out of it, but all were walking, perhaps just a little gingerly.
For the 3rd time this year the #441 B44 lost all drive, this time a gear selector gone astray. The old BSA finally broke a ring after being smokey for a couple of races. It needs a new piston which may be difficult to find. Les had to ride the XL in the over 50's race & complained about soft back suspension. It seems fine to me!

BLACK DUCK VINDURO - CAMPBELLTOWN - JULY 27TH
"FANTASTIC, GREAT SUPER, MAGNIFICENT, OK AND BEAUT"
The turn up and support in the running of this day was all of the above.
On the riders part we saw a lot of happy and satisfied people (even down to the unorthodox way of trying to catch yabbies in the Heaney dam by an unnamed rider.
He and all of us know who he is!)
Saturday night was superb with Mark (F*!?XZ#*) Ramsay Edwards cooking up a great meat dish and his side kick John “Webber” Heaney on the vegies.
To Bronwyn and Des Heaney for supplying the venue and their tireless work to see that it all went extra well, our Club Members who helped out and as well as everyone who attended this beaut day - THANK YOU you to all.
Those who missed this meeting have missed a Super Fun Day.

WEB EDITOR'S NOTE:
I ignored the constant rain on Saturday night and drove out early Sunday morning (because I know that it hardly ever rains near Castlemaine!) - signed-in in ten minutes, got my number and pushed my bike to the Parc Ferme.
Having never ridden an enduro before I had no idea what to expect and I must admit that when I started and slipped and slid around the first 4 turns I thought it was going to be the longest 30 minutes of my life - then the track opened up and I ended up having some of the most fun I have ever had on a bike. I don't know how long I took on the first loop (and didn't care) nor the two after that (I do know they were longer as it did get a little wetter underfoot!).
A huge thanks to Peter Drakeford and Sean Hamilton for the effort they put in (and the twisted thoughts they put into the creek run!).
If you have a pre-85 off-road bike that you can screw/strap/tape a headlight on - I strongly suggest getting along to the Castella Vinduro in September!
